These are the earliest attempts at splicing 2x2mm square fibers using modified equipment for the splicing unit.  There remains improvements to be made.  The number one goal is to fuse two fibers without having any of the melted material leak out of the ferules.  A high percentage light transmission through the fuse is also important.
